Rwanda : Located on 1° 56′ 37.98″ S, 30° 3′ 34.02″ E, Rwanda also goes by the moniker pays des milles collines which is French for Land of a thausand hills.It is located in the greatlakes region of eastern-central Africa bordering Uganda,Burundi,DRC Congo and Tanzania and is a landlocked country with Kigali as the capital.
Despite Rwanda’s proximity to the Equator,She enjoys a cool temperate climate which compliments the grassy uplands.She is graced with a population of about 10.5 million people of mainly Hutu,tutsi and Twa origin.Rwanda is divided into five provinces commonly reffered to as intara and 30 districts all under the hospice of President Paul Kagame.
Rwanda has been dogged by a gory past going through a revolution in 1959 which led in the expulsion of about 150.000 Tutsi natives,a civil war in 1990 and a corollary genocide in 1994 which saw the death of about 1.174.000 Tutsi and Hutu people in 100 days in a then population of 7.5 million people.This has been dubbed one of the worst genocides of the 20th century in Africa only coming second to the Somali-Ethopian genocide where 1.5 million were killed.
However,Rwanda has managed to get over her past and pulled up her own boot straps becoming Africa’s biggest success story. The stability,economic growth with a trippled average income over the last 10 years,international intergration(Rwanda joined the common wealth on 29th November 2009 becoming the 54th member of the commonwealth),cleanliness and security illustrates this.Kigali the capital of Rwanda,has earned the Habitat Scroll of Honor Award making her the first country in Africa to garner that award.Rwanda has vehemently been at the fore front of women emancipation becoming the first country to elect women as majority members in the national legislature in 2008.
First occupied by the Germans in the period of 1884-1885,but formally a Belgian colony because she got her independence from the Belgians,Rwanda originally is a Francophone speaking country but has since shifted to the Anglophone speaking curricullum.Languages Kinyarwanda , French and Kiswahili are most spoken in Rwanda in a population of mainly catholic majority.
Rwanda is primarily served by Kigali International Airport which is the main gateway to all destinations in Rwanda. Kigali International Airport lies approximately 12 kilometres in a suburb called Kanombe east of Kigali the capital of Rwanda.
