Gorilla facts
- An average male gorilla stands at 6 feet weighing upto 600 pounds(those in captivity) while the average female gorilla stands at 5 feet weighing 200 pounds.
- Gorillas have an average lifespan of 30 to 35 years for the those that live in the wilderness and 40 to 45 years for those captured.
- Males gorillas start mating between 7 to 8 years and the females 6 to 7 years.
- A female gorilla has a gestation period of 8.5 to 9 months.
- Gorillas are the largest and strongest of all primates
- There are high and lowland gorillas.
- Gorillas mate all year round.
- Female gorillas produce once every 4 years.
- Female gorillas breed more frequently if their offspring die during infancy.

- Young adult gorilla males live alone, only joing groups temporarily only taking females to mate eventually making their own groups.

- Two gorilla families can coexist in serenity in the same area.
- Each evening they build nests in trees where to spend their nights,an art they learn at a tender age.They make rougher nests for day time sietas.
- Gorillas believe in social grooming which they do by combing through the fur,hands and teeth of each other.

- Gorillas are herbivorous and feed on leaves,stems and branches of trees.Bamboo is their favorite delicacy.
- An averge male gorilla eats upto 50 pounds of food a day.
- When an intruder unwarningly appears,the silver back(head of family) gets agitated heaving straight to the intruder at it’s full height thumping it’s chest, only stoping when the intruder slowly backs away.
- More than ½ of the world’s gorillas are found in the greatlakes region of East Africa.
- Since gorillas walk in families,they move in heirachy of their ranks with the head silver back in the lead
