Rwanda Gorilla Families
There are 5 gorilla families in Rwanda currently and these are: Susa, Amahoro A ,Group 13 , Umubano , Sabyinyo.
The Susa family consists 39 gorillas with 3 Silverback gorillas ,5 black backs,8 females,3 infants and 12 juveniles.The Susa group is found on the slopes of Mount Karisimbi.It is from this group that gorilla activist Dian Fossey got her first friend in peanuts a young gorilla then.It is the most active of gorilla family and furthest as they sometimes move to higher altitudes.
The Sabinyo family, has nine members and is generally the easiet family to access.It is found on the slopes of Mount Sabyinyo and Gahinga.
Group 13, with 10 members, is like wise easy to reach and, according to park guides, is led by a very relaxed silverback.This family is found on the slopes of Mount Sabyinyo and is harder to get to compared to the Amahoro and Susa family.
The Amahoro A family consists of 15 members:1 silver back and black back gorilla,5 females,3 juveniles and 2 infants.Found on the slopes of Mount Visoke(part of the volcanic Virunga ranges) and is led by silver back Ubumwe
The Umubano group is made up of 7 members with 1 silver back,2 females,1 juvenile and 1 infant.Led by Charles the dominant silver back .The Umubano group is an estranged part of the Amahoro family that broke off after Charles could not take Ubumwe’s orders anymore,a fight broke out for months and Charles started his own family taking a couple of females with him,he is one of the youngest known silver backs.This group is found on the slopes of Mount Visoke.
