In a bid to reduce accidents caused by cyclists, Nyanza district authorities have passed a new regulation for all cyclists to have bicycle lamp as an obligation.
The district officials decided that bicycle users without lamp lights are prohibited to use the roads beyond 6pm.
The decision comes after reports indicated that many residents have died and others injured as a result of accidents caused by bicycle users who travel during the evening hours, without lights.
One example was sighted on February 18, 2012- a vehicle belonging to Innocent Nshimiyukiza, 33, knocked and seriously injured one Emmanuel Kagoboka, 54- who was on a bicycle during later hours.
The incident occurred in Kinyogoto village, Mukingo sector, according to the accident report. However, similar accidents have occurred in various sectors in Nyanza district and reports suggest that the accidents are due to lack of front lamp lights on bicycles.
The district administrative council recommended that the resolution should be implemented immediately.
The district Mayor Abdallah Murenzi asked sector and cell leaders have to address this problem since most of the bicycle users are village residents who in most cases do not abide by traffic rules and prone to accidents due to the influence of alcohol.
